Ashura

Ashura Literally means “the tenth day” in Arabic language which is marked as one of the most tragic days in the Islamic history.  Ashura is the 10th Muharram which is the first month of Muslim lunar calendar. This day marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain along with his 72 companions in Karbala (which is located in modern-day Iraq) in 680 A.D.

Why it happened?

After death of Yazid's father, He was determined to silence those who questioned his legitimacy as new Caliph. Imam Hussein refused to pay allegiance to Yazid due to many reasons. He remained defiant in his beliefs and said “Death with dignity is better than life with humiliation.”

Imam Hussain was one of the grandsons of Prophet Muhammad. The day of Ashura is marked by Muslims as a whole, However for Shia Muslims is a major religious commemoration. Special mourning rituals are observed on this day. Ashura is a holiday in some Muslim countries including Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan and Bahrain while in India government offices, post offices and banks are closed.

Ta’zieh (meaning Condolence Theater) is also practiced in Iran during month of Muharram. Ta’zieh is a theatrical genre in which the epics about Ashura are conveyed through music and dramatic narration and originally performed outdoors in public places.
