Naqsh-e Jahan Square

Also known as: Maidan-e Naqsh-e Jahan, Imam Square

Naqsh-e Jahan Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was constructed by Safavid king Shah Abbas in the 17th century, when the city of Isfahan was the capital of Iran during the Safavid dynasty. The historical square is considered as the second biggest square in the world after Mao Zedong’s Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Naqsh-e Jahan is hemmed in by a series of two-floor arched arcades on both sides.

A Living Museum

Every corner of the historical square has something special to offer. The square holds several splendid structures including Sheikh Lutfollah Mosque, Ali Qapu Palace and Qeysarieh Portal, all seen as great legacies of the Safavid Dynasty. The square and its historical monuments have been designed to stand the test of time remaining intact after hundreds of years. The goal posts used in regular polo games can still be seen at each end. Fountains in the middle of the square are the only modern additions.

Festival of Colors

The colors of monuments surrounding the square change throughout the day as sunlight fades away. The glory of the historical sites can particularly be seen at sunset when the golden reflection of sunlight displays a festival of colors. In the evening, the fountains are turned on and the square becomes a picnic spot for local families. The people of Isfahan are very friendly, so be prepared, you will probably be invited for a tea or snack!

Never-ending Shops

You can take horse and carriage rides or just walk around and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. There are also great traditional tea houses and restaurant nearby. The gallery of shops surrounding the square seem never-ending! They sell everything from hand-woven Persian carpets to exquisite handicrafts.
